Difficulties during micturition (emptying and storing urine in the bladder) are common in ageing men and can be divided in „storage“ symptoms and „voiding“ symptoms. Frequently observed symptoms while emptying the bladder („voiding smptoms“) are weak urinary stream and post-void residual volume. Also, you might experience post-void dribbling issues. The other symptoms („storage“ symptoms) might even be more bothersome and include frequent voiding during the day and night as well as „urgency“, which means that if you feel like you have to empty your bladder you need to rush and have very little room to hold the urine for much longer. The worst part is that these problems are increasing with time and have a negative impact on your quality of life.
If this is the case, and you experience these symptoms, it is time to start treatment. Goals of treatment are to improve symptoms, to increase quality of life and to avoid complications such as urinary tract infections, acute urinary retention (unability to empty the bladder, which happens acutely and causes tremendous pain) or renal insufficiency (kidney function goes down).
